City of Charleston
Bees Landing Recreation Center

Tennis Courts.

From: Peggy Bohne - Tennis Manager.

I was forwarded an e-mail concerning the Bees Landing tennis courts and asked to respond since I am the City of Charleston Department of Recreation's Tennis Manager.
I understand your concerns about the Bees Landing tennis courts and want to assure that we have every intension of keeping courts open for nearby neighborhood residents as well as running programs that residents will want to participate in.

The City has tennis courts at 14 sites and right now they are all very busy. People are eager to get outside after a cold winter and we have courts closed at several facilities as they are being repaired. This has caused our other courts to be in great demand.

The Charleston Tennis Center courts are currently being resurfaced. The company is resurfacing 6 courts at a time. City leagues were already scheduled at the Charleston Tennis Center, but due to weather conditions in January and February the resurfacing work is behind schedule causing matches to have to be moved to other locations. We are trying to spread the matches out between the Jack Adams Tennis Center, Moultrie Playground and the Bees Landing courts so no one facility is overburdened with matches.

We also have an Elementary and Middle School Tennis League with 111 teams. These teams use 4 of the 6 courts during the hours of 4 to 6 PM. Many of the schools do not have City courts close to their school or in a neighborhood close to their school or home. We have the children scheduled on many of our City courts as well as some private clubs in the Charleston area. In all, about 1000 children are playing weekly matches in the tri-county area.

At Bees Landing, the courts will be open to the public most of the time. We will post signs to help people know when some of the courts are being used a for a special program.

We hope that the courts at the Charleston Tennis Center will be finished in the next few weeks freeing up the times that we are using our 6 courts facilities.

We look forward to working with the Bees Landing Homeowners Association to get the children and adults involved in some of our programs including lessons and possibly some neighborhood teams.
